Garden City of China · Where Heaven Meets Earth
Suzhou, known as the 'Garden City of China,' is a 2,500-year-old cultural gem in Jiangsu Province. Famous for its classical gardens — nine of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Suzhou is a city where poetry and landscape merge. The Humble Administrator's Garden, Tiger Hill, and Lingering Garden embody centuries of horticultural artistry, while Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street preserve the charm of ancient water towns with their canals and stone bridges. Designed by I.M. Pei, the Suzhou Museum seamlessly bridges traditional and modern. From the 1,500-year-old Hanshan Temple immortalized in Tang dynasty poetry to the sweet delicacies of Suzhou cuisine, this city invites you to slow down and savor every detail.
From UNESCO classical gardens to ancient water town streets and I.M. Pei's architectural masterpiece

The largest classical garden in Suzhou and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covering 52,000 square meters. Built in 1509 during the Ming Dynasty, it features exquisite pavilions, lotus ponds, zigzag bridges, and rockeries arranged with poetic precision. Its name comes from a poem about the simple life of a retired official.
Visit early morning to avoid crowds. The lotus pond is most beautiful in summer. Combine with Suzhou Museum next door.

A hill with 2,500 years of history, legendary burial site of King Helü of Wu. The leaning Yunyan Pagoda, dating to 961 AD, is known as the 'Leaning Tower of China.' The mysterious Sword Pool, carved into the rock, is said to hide the king's legendary swords. Su Shi once said: 'To visit Suzhou without Tiger Hill is a regret.'
The Sword Pool is the highlight — go early. The pagoda tilts 2.3 degrees. Autumn osmanthus fragrance fills the air.

A 2,500-year-old water town street running alongside a narrow canal, preserving the ancient layout of Suzhou. Stone bridges arch over the water, while traditional white-walled houses line the cobblestone path. Today it blends heritage with modern charm — teahouses, handicraft shops, and Kunqu opera performances live side by side.
Take a canal boat ride for the best views. Try Suzhou-style snacks at the small shops along the street.

Famous for its extraordinary labyrinth of taihu rock formations resembling lion shapes, this 14th-century garden is a masterpiece of rockery art. The maze-like paths wind through caves, peaks, and tunnels — a playful and meditative experience. Originally built as a meditation garden for a Buddhist monk.
The rockery maze is easy to get lost in — enjoy it! Look for the lion-shaped rocks from different angles.

One of China's Four Famous Gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Lingering Garden is celebrated for its elegant balance of architecture and nature. Unlike the grand Humble Administrator's Garden, it offers an intimate, refined experience with carefully framed views through moon gates, corridors, and windows.
Smaller but more refined than the Humble Administrator's Garden. The corridor connecting different sections is an architectural gem.

A 1,500-year-old Buddhist temple immortalized by the Tang dynasty poem 'Night Mooring by Maple Bridge': 'At midnight, the bell of Hanshan Temple reaches the guest's boat.' The temple complex features the iconic bell tower, pagoda, and a replica of the original bell still rung on New Year's Eve.
The poem is inscribed on a stele inside. Visit during New Year for the traditional bell-ringing ceremony.

Known as 'Seven-Li Shantang,' this 1,200-year-old commercial street stretches along a canal from Chang Gate to Tiger Hill. The restored Ming and Qing dynasty buildings house traditional snack shops, silk stores, and teahouses. At night, red lanterns reflected in the canal create a magical scene of old Jiangnan.
Evening is the most atmospheric time. The canal boat ride from Shantang to Tiger Hill is unique.

Designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei (a Suzhou native), this museum is a masterpiece of modern architecture blended with traditional Suzhou garden aesthetics. White walls, gray stone, geometric water features, and natural light create a serene space housing over 25,000 artifacts from Wu culture and Chinese art.
Must book online in advance — extremely popular. The building itself is the main exhibit. Free entry.
Discover the refined sweetness of Suzhou cuisine, from squirrel fish to Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs

Suzhou's most iconic dish: a whole mandarin fish deboned, scored in a crosshatch pattern, battered and deep-fried to resemble a squirrel's tail, then covered in sweet and sour sauce. The crispy fish with its dramatic presentation dates back to the Qing Dynasty imperial kitchens.

The most prized crabs in China, harvested from Yangcheng Lake near Suzhou from September to November. Known for their sweet, delicate meat and rich roe, these crabs are steamed and served with ginger tea and rice vinegar. An autumn culinary ritual in Suzhou.

How Suzhou people start their day: thin noodles served in a clear, amber-colored broth slow-simmered for hours with pork bones, eel, and shrimp shells. Topped with braised pork, eel slices, or shrimp. The broth is deceptively simple but deeply flavorful.

A refined Suzhou dish of shredded eel stir-fried and served with a ladle of sizzling oil poured over it at the table, creating a dramatic sizzle. The tender eel is seasoned with ginger, scallion, and white pepper — a testament to Suzhou's delicate cooking style.

Pork belly braised until meltingly tender and glazed with a sweet red sauce that gives it the color and appearance of cherries. This classic Suzhou dish balances sweet and savory, with the fatty pork transformed into a jewel-like delicacy.

Delicate, flaky pastries with fillings like sweet osmanthus, red bean paste, walnut cream, and fresh flower petals. Suzhou's pastry-making tradition spans over a thousand years, with seasonal specialties like fresh meat mooncakes in autumn and osmanthus cakes in fall.

Freshwater shrimp stir-fried with Biluochun tea leaves, one of China's most famous green teas grown in Suzhou's Dongting Mountains. The tea leaves impart a subtle floral aroma to the sweet, tender shrimp — a perfect marriage of Suzhou's two treasures.

Three delicacies from Taihu Lake — white fish, white shrimp, and silver fish — each prepared with minimal seasoning to highlight their natural sweetness. Steamed white fish with ginger, boiled white shrimp, and silver fish egg drop soup represent the pure flavors of Suzhou.

A luxurious Suzhou soup made from the liver of the pufferfish (fugu), carefully prepared by trained chefs to ensure safety. The silky, creamy broth has an umami depth unlike anything else — so prized that locals say 'once you taste pufferfish, no other fish compares.'
